Amy Brenneman was born on June 22, 1964 in New London, Connecticut, USA. She attended Harvard University where she majored in comparative religion and graduated in 1987.

Her significant television role was in the police drama NYPD Blue as Janice Licalsi, for which she received an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

After her stint in NYPD Blue, she appeared in such films as Casper, Heat, Fear, Daylight and Nevada.

In 2007, she played Sylvia Avila in the film The Jane Austen Book Club, and starred in 88 Minutes alongside Al Pacino the following year.
