Amy Carlson was born on July 7, 1968 in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, U.S.. She finished her degree from Knox College, graduating cum laude. In 1992, she made her debut in the movie The Babe. She next guest starred on the show Missing Persons. Her first significant role was as Josephine Watts on Another World. She stayed on the show for almost six years. Afterwards, she starred on the miniseries Thanks of a Grateful Nation.

She continued her television career in the 2000s. During this period, she became known for playing Alex Taylor on Third Watch from 2000 to 2003. She next starred as A.D.A. Kelly Gaffney on Law & Order: Trial by Jury. From 2010 to 2017, she became further known for starring as Linda Reagan on Blue Bloods. On the big screen, she has appeared in the films Anamorph, Green Lantern, Hits, and Natural Selection.
