He later gained recognition for his role as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street during the 1990s. Simultaneously, he had performances in the films Striking Distance, Primal Fear, Get on the Bus, Thick as Thieves, City of Angels, and It’s the Rage. In the 2000s, he played Dr. Ben Gideon in Gideon’s Crossing and starred as Marcellus Washington in the TV series Hack. He went on to star as Owen Thoreau Jr. in the TNT series Men of a Certain Age. As of 2013, he stars as Raymond Holt in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
