Biography:

Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976 in Hammersmith, London, England. He studied drama at the University of Manchester and continued his training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

He then performed in several plays at the Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park, Almeida Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and the Royal National Theatre. In 2004, he gained fame for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the TV movie Hawking.

He went on to star in a number of mainstream films including War Horse, Star Trek Into Darkness, and 12 Years a Slave. As of 2010, he plays Sherlock Holmes in the television series Sherlock.
