Early Life and Rise to Prominence

Gisele Caroline Bündchen is a Brazilian fashion model who gained international prominence for her mainstream appearances on prestigious magazines as well as on runway shows. She is regarded as one of the Brazilian models who found international success in the late 1990s.

Born on July 20, 1980 in Três de Maio, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, she was dubbed as “The Return of the Sexy Model” by Vogue. She was also credited with the ending of the heroin chic look, characterized by pale skin, angular bone structure and dark circles underneath the eyes.

Her modeling journey began when she joined a modeling course along with her sisters Patricia and Gabriela in 1993 with their mother eagerly wanting them to. The following year, the odds were already on her favor when she was discovered by the Elite modeling agency while on a school excursion at a São Paulo shopping mall.

After this, she was chosen to join the Elite Look of the Year, in which she came second. She then placed fourth in the Elite Model Look World Contest. She subsequently relocated to São Paulo to launch her modeling career officially.

In 1996, she had her first break in New York when she joined the Fashion Week. She then went to London where she auditioned for 42 shows and was able to book a job for Alexander McQueen’s spring 1998’s “rain” ready-to-wear fashion show. She was chosen for the job for her ability to walk in towering heels on a slippery runway.

McQueen was pleased with her work that she was dubbed “The Body”, which significantly increased her chances of being booked. She gained wider recognition in the fashion world when she secured her first British Vogue cover in 1998. She later became the most in-demand cover girl of her generation with 10 covers in a span of less than 4 years. During this time, she also appeared in ad campaigns for such companies as Missoni, Chloé, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Gianfranco Ferré, Ralph Lauren, and Versace, to only name a few.

By 2000, the Brazilian beauty became the world’s hottest model. She also became the fourth model to be featured on the cover of the music magazine Rolling Stone where she was named “the most beautiful girl in the world”. Bündchen also found her way on the covers of other prominent magazines such as W, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Allure.

Overall, she appeared on a total of 600 magazine covers all over the world. Also by 2000, her record-breaking contract with Victoria’s Secret cemented her status as a top model. With Victoria’s Secret, she wore the most expensive bra of all time, the “Red Hot Fantasy Bra”, which was worth $15 million and was listed by the Guinness World Records as the most expensive lingerie ever made. This created so much buzz that the model became popular than ever.

Plastic Surgery Rumors, Denials and More

The international model has had her fair share of plastic surgery claims. She was first rumored of going under the knife when people noticed that she had gone from flat to having fuller chest. Being someone who wears and displays lingerie for a living, it was easy for observers to see that her alleged breast implants helped in filling out her bikini tops and bras that she often models on the runway and magazines.

But the high-regarded model denied these rumors by dismissing the idea of plastic surgery. In an interview, she said: “No way (will I have surgery). Actually, I asked my mother the very same question and she said, ‘It’s taken me 58 years for me to look like this. You think I’m going to ruin it now?’ She (Giselle’s mom) looks great, so I hope I will look the same.” Her statement didn’t sit well for some who thought it was hypocrisy on Bündchen’s part as it was apparent that she’s had something done.

Aside from having her breasts enhanced, she was also reported of undergoing a nose job. It was said that because of her German lineage, her nose before the alleged surgery looked masculine. It came off strong that the model probably had decided to change her nose, prompting her to undergo a rhinoplasty procedure. The reports, however, still go unconfirmed as the international top model has never confessed to undergoing any sorts of cosmetic procedures.
