Biography:
Hugh Dancy was born on June 19, 1975 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. He left for London after his college graduation. There, he found an agent and began his acting career. He began his television career in the late 1990s with roles in The New Adventures of Robin Hood, Dangerfield, and Cold Feet. In 2000, he played the titular character in the TV movie David Copperfield and played Leon in Madame Bovary.
He gained mainstream recognition in 2004 for his starring roles in such films as King Arthur where he played Galahad and Ella Enchanted where he played the male lead opposite Anne Hathaway. His performance of Earl of Essex in the 2006 miniseries Elizabeth I earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. In the late 2000s, he starred in The Jane Austen Book Club, Savage Grace, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Adam. He then returned to television, starring Will Graham in Hannibal.
