Ian McKellen is an English actor. His career started in the 1960s, performing on the stage and screen. On television, he portrayed the titular character in the BBC serial David Copperfield. While he starred in several films in the 1980s and the 1990s, he gained mainstream fame in the 2000s for his role as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto in the X-Men films. It was also during this period that he played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. He went on to play Sir Leigh Teabing in The Da Vinci Code and Iorek Byrnison in The Golden Compass. In the 2010s, he played Gandalf again in The Hobbit film trilogy.
