Julie Bowen was born on March 3, 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. After high school, she attended Brown University where she majored in Italian Renaissance studies. At this time, she was already active in musicals. She initially started her acting career in the soap opera Loving in 1992 while she first acted for films in 1996. Her first notable role on television was as Roxanne Please in ER.

From 2000 to 2004, she became further known for playing Carol Vessey in Ed. She next played Sarah Shephard in Lost and achieved wider success for her role in Boston Legal in the mid to late 2000s. Following this, she continued her success after securing a main role in the comedy show Modern Family, which became an acclaimed series.
