Kangana Ranaut was born on March 20, 1987 in Bhambla, Himachal Pradesh, India. She attended college for a few months before moving to Delhi and signed with Elite Modelling Agency.

In 2005, she moved to Mumbai to attempt working in films. She had her breakthrough when she was cast by Anurag Basu in the film Gangster. The film became commercially and critically successful that it instantly catapulted her into stardom.

She then went on to star as a troubled model in the film Fashion, for which she earned a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2008.
