Liya Kebede was born on March 1, 1978 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her biggest break was when Tom Ford asked her for an exclusive contract for his Gucci Fall/Winter 2000 Fashion Show.

She then gained wider recognition when she graced the cover of the May 2002 edition of Paris Vogue, dedicating the entire issue to her. She has since appeared in ad campaigns for such brands as Gap, Victoria’s Secret, Revlon, Dolce & Gabbana, and Louis Vuitton.

She also ventured into acting, making appearances in the movies The Good Shepard, Desert Flower, Black Gold and The Best Officer.
