Luke Grimes was born on January 21, 1984 in Dayton, Ohio, United States. After high school, he relocated to New York to attend American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 2006, he made his acting debut as Jake in the independent film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. He next appeared in the movie War Eagle, Arkansas.

From 2009 to 2010, he became known for his role as Ryan Lafferty on Brothers & Sisters. In 2013, he played the role of James in six episodes of True Blood. In 2014, he portrayed Marc Lee in the movie American Sniper. He next starred as Elliott Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey and played Teddy Q in The Magnificent Seven. He recently reprised his role as Elliott in Fifty Shades Darker.
