Biography:
Lupita Nyong’o was born on March 1, 1983 in Mexico City, Mexico, though she grew up in Kenya. She moved to the US to attend Hampshire College where she finished a degree in film and theater. She entered the acting industry afterwards as a production assistant on numerous Hollywood productions. In 2008, she made her first acting job in the short film East River in 2008.
The following year, she appeared on the television series Shuga after going back to Kenya. Around the same time, she wrote, directed, and produced the documentary titled In My Genes. She returned to the United States to complete her master’s degree at the Yale School of Drama. Her first role on the big screen was in the movie 12 Years a Slave, which won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first Mexican and Kenyan to win an Oscar.
