Having her parents as well-known actors, Rumer herself started her own acting career, first appearing in movies her mother starred in, like in Now and Then and Striptease. She eventually landed roles in other films on her own, such as in Hostage, Sorority Row, and The House Bunny. Around the same time, she became part of the main cast of the short-lived series 90210.
