Salma Hayek was born on September 2, 1966 in Veracruz, Mexico. She studied International Relations in Mexico City’s Universidad Iberoamericana where she felt ready to pursue acting. She soon landed the title role in Teresa, a successful soap opera in Mexico.

She moved to Hollywood in 1991 and had landed only small parts until Robert Rodriguez saw her on the late-night Spanish-language talk show. He gave her her big break to star opposite Antonio Banderas in the cult classic Desperado.

Her breakthrough role was in Frida where she received an Academy and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress.
