Yancy Butler was born on July 2, 1970 in Manhattan, New York, U.S. Her first acting gig was in the 1979 movie Savage Weekend when she was a kid. She, however, only became active in the 1990s. Her first notable role on the small screen was as Officer Anne-Marie Kersey in Brooklyn South. During this period, she had roles in the films Hard Target, Drop Zone, Let It Be Me, and The Ex.

In the 2000s, her career in television flourished. She played the role of Detective Sara Pezzini in Witchblade. She also played the role of Ava Jenkins in As the World Turns. She later starred in the TV movies Wolvesbayne and Lake Placid 3 where she played Reba. She reprised her role in the sequels, also TV films Lake Placid: The Final Chapter and Lake Placid vs. Anaconda.
