Biography:

Zhang Ziyi, sometimes credited as Ziyi Zhang, was born in Beijing, China on February 9, 1979. She began studying dance at the age of 8. She subsequently joined the Beijing Dance Academy at the age of 11.

In 1996, she entered China’s Central Academy of Drama. It was there that she was offered her first role by director Zhang Yimou in The Road Home.

She rose to further prominence with her role as Jen in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, for which she won several awards in the west. Her first appearance in an American movie was in Rush Hour 2.
